Woven Wood Board
A new woodworking technique I recently learned is called "wood weaving." This is a Charcuterie board for displaying food, but can also be used as a cutting board. The wood is Sycamore with a Juniper inlay, which are softer woods, so cutting knives can more easily cut chip the wood. The cedar inlay wouldn't be hard if it were a straight strip. But this technique involves first gluing the board together, then cutting it in any wavy design pattern you like. The thinnest strip of contrasting wood (1/8" or even 1/16") is placed in the gap, and it bends to conform to the space when the board is clamped and glued togather again.
Details
- Large, rectangular, with plenty of room for a smorgasbord of hors d’oeuvres.
- Finished with all natural food-grade tung oil
- Occasionally wash with mild dish soap. Light scrub, quick rinse. Dry right after.
About the Wood
From a distance, the tall, white Sycamore can disappear against a winter sky, or, against a stormy sky, the trunks seem to glow when the sun peeks out. The wood itself has a flecked, lace-like appearance, with a center of rich sienna fading to a warm, sand-colored edge. Juniper has a burgundy heart, giving it a rich contrast to other woods.
