Why Cattywampus?
Cattywampus means Intentionally Distinct.
Woodworking that goes against the grain.
Most of the wood we use for handmade projects comes from trees that have fallen around Kansas City—usually from storms or from clearing land for new housing developments. Pieces with tall steeples of cathedral grain that contractors run away from are perfectly Cattywampus. Knots, checks, color changes, old scars, and other quirks that aren’t structural problems make the finished piece interesting.
Where Cattywampus meets laser precision
We do use manufactured wood for the laser engraving. The laser creates details in wood that would be fussy—or impossible—to do by hand. It's an entirely different but complementary skill set.
